A winter's morning in Killarney

A winter's morning in Killarney

This image was taken on Sat 23rd of January looking down on the town of Killarney. It was a morning that was filled with frost and also fear due to the bitter cold weather. 5 of us were cycling and decided to stick to the main roads for safety reasons. We stopped at this point for the usual half way banana and mis-truths about how many miles we have done in the past week, even though the training miles usually show in the legs well before the half way point, especially on the road from Faranfore into Killarney which is up and down and fast. We were all glad to have headed out despite the weather and arrived safely back in Tralee.

This 14 Miles/22 K route is probably the most famous cycling route to anyone who has cycled in Currow, especially seeing as it is the route for the John Drumm Cup race held in June annually. It is known as being a very tough route with combinations of short and sharp climbs as well as fast descents and rolling roads.

I have learned from the Chain Gang CC website that the legendary Jimmy Duffy has passed on.

I first came to know of Jimmy in a Currow CC leisure cycle some years back. He had a very old bike, was cycling on bermuda shorts and had a ragged leather Jacket. Every one there found it difficult to size him up, he had a body that looked like he had worked a hard life and at times he seemed very out of place, that is until he sat up on the bicycle. After the leisure cycle was over and after eating his fill he announced that he still had some miles to go as not only had he to cycle back home to Blennerville but first he had to cycle in the direction of Killarney to get duck eggs. A character and example of determination of old, the likes of which I don’t know can be seen again. May he rest in peace.

Shedding the pounds

Shedding the pounds

Ok so one of my goals for 2010 is to loose weight. I’m not that overweight, I estimate that I am probably 10 pounds too many which may be a small amount for others to loose but I have struggled to shed these pounds over the years. Anytime I try to loose weight I can loose three or four pounds with a few weeks effort but then I seem to loose momentum and it goes back on in a number of days. I wouldn’t say I am a binge eater but I do have some bad habits: I love cheese, chocolate, biscuits and all of those things that give doctors wrickles on their browlines. All of my excess weight is around my mid section.

So this year as a promise to myself and thinking about all of the climbs that I will be struggling up in the coming year, the weight is going! Sounds pretty decisive? Well I hope to make it so. As well as an exercise regime which I always try to maintain i have got to make changes to my diet as i don’t eat too much but the quality of the foods I eat has to change. Since the beginning on the new year I have begun implementing the following changes:
