The 2012 An Post Rás was launched in Dublin on Thursday 26th of January with the help of former winners Mick Murphy and Gene Mangan. For more details on the route check out the website. A bit disappointing that it does not come to Kerry but here’s hoping for a return in 2012.

The 2011 An Post Rás route has just been launched. You can access the full details here. The most interesting news is that stages 3 & 4 (May 25th and 25th) will be in county Kerry.

An Post Rás 2011

Stage 3 will involve a very difficult 175.3 kilometre cycle from Kilrush to Castleisland ending with the Category 1 climb of Gleansharoon, just past Crag Cave with the summit being just 8 kilometres from the finish, which is bound to split the bunch up and make the finish very interesting. The stage end in Castleisland will be hosted by Currow Cycling Club and well done to them for being involved in bringing the Rás back to Castleisland.

Stage 4 will also begin in Castleisland and will see the riders travel 142 kilometres  to Castetownbere. For more information on the Rás, keep an eye on the Rás website.

Cycling Ireland have published their Draft Calendar for 2011. Looks interesting and worth a read. Also of not farther down the page is that Cycling Ireland are keeping the A4 category, nice!

Dear Sir/ Madam

I am very displeased to learn of your proposals to change the grading system for next year, expecially with regard to replacing the A4 category with a new “Sport” category. The two proposals that I take issue with are that “there can be no cash prizes” and that there can only be “three placings”. I understand that you are trying to make racing more accessible to everyone but what you are doing is sucking the incentive to race regularly for people who simply don’t have the time to train with the intensity of others out of cycling in Ireland. Proposing to make the field bigger and the opportunity to get a trophy smaller is going to make a rider less interested in riding such a race.

I think that you should have kept the A4 category and introduced the “Sport” category as a step below it. The A4 category woul cater for a rider who rants to race regularly enough but can’t/doesn’t do much consistent training in between, the step below would cater for people who would not be interested in racing regularly but would ‘have a go’ if an ocassion presented itself.

From what I can see the plans for adopting these changes are already set in motion for next year,  I hope it will not affect the growth of racing in Ireland as was seen in 2010.

Yours in Sport

The Kerry Cyclist.

The All-Ireland Hill Climb Cycling Championships was held in Tralee in very wet and windy conditions on Saturday. The event which was hosted by Tralee Bicycle Club was a 4KM individual hill climb based in the Sliabh Mish Mountains in Tralee, known locally as “Short Mountain”, which roses to a height of 310 Meters.  Mountainbiker Ryan Sherlock (Mad MTB, Dublin) surprised many pundits by taking first place, followed closely by local favourite and defending champion Paul Griffin (Earl of Desmond/Tralee BC) in second place with Cathal McCarthy (The Edge CC) taking the final podium spot.

Cycling the Ring of Kerry is always an achievement. For some people the satisfaction of getting around safely and returning home with a smile is enough to keep them satisfied until next years event. For others it is not enough. I have recently read about Eoin Ryan a man from Dromid in Co. Kerry who pushed himself to cycle around the Ring of Kerry no less than five times in succession this year, starting on Thursday 1st of July and Finishing on Saturday the 3rd in Killarney, with his last ‘lap’ involving cycling with others in the annual event. Total cycling time was 45 Hours and 30 Hours.

Eoin was cycling on behalf of the Kerry Parents and Friends Association and is still collecting for them. To find him, look for the man walking crooked around Dromid I would imagine. Chapeau Eoin!
