Hi Bill, this date referred to the 2011 cycle, as of yet there is no known date for 2012. I will keep an eye out and update the site as soon as I come across it.

No it would be ideal! Just make sure to bring some food and spares with you depending on how far you want to go, as it's quite remote in parts, which is one of the most beautiful things about it :)

Hi, I will be down that way soon and was wondering if the cycle would be too difficult on a hybrid cycle. Gap of Dunloe looks and sounds amazing.
Thanks

Went through the Gap of Dunloe last night. Left Killarney at 6.45pm and there was a huge dark cloud over the Gap. It rained a few times on the way but I got through the Gap fine. It was a bit scary though - with no people around :) I did get lost on the way back. Took the turn to Lord Brandon's cottage instead of the Molls Gap route which was not signposted. Checked it on the map afterwards to see where I went wrong. A lady came out of the cottage and showed me a short cut to N71 on a Kerry Way path through the fields and the woods. I was so glad to get back on N71 - such a relief. Was rewarded with the most beautiful sunset - the sun was on fire! A lovely route. Would want to do it again, although during the day or if in the evening, then not on my own :)

Congrats on the Ring of Kerry Irina, I hope you enjoyed the day and thanks for your kind words. I was actually thinking of doing that 130Km myself as I didn't get around to it last year. I have a run up the Gap of Dunloe on the cards aswell in the next few weeks, definately don't get out that way too often! Best of look in the Iverage challenge and keep cycling :-)

Thank you for your posts, I find them most informative. I had a long break from cycling but got back into it this year. Just did the Ring of Kerry last Saturday and am on the roll! Signed up for Iveragh200 (130km route). Will cycle Gap of Dunloe and Black Valley this Sunday to prepare myself or Iveragh challenge in 2 weeks.

Hi Mark, Thanks for getting in touch and great to hear you are out on the bike. It really depends on your fitness to start with. However if you were able to handle 61K with enough energy to do some more after then that is not a bad start. A 150 Km cycle is an ambitious cycle so soon. I would suggest you do a 120-130K cycle at a consistent and comfortable pace, making sure to eat and stay hydrated properly and judge yourself how you get on. If you find you are able for that then you should be fine on the day. Best of luck! Donnacha

The 1997 Ring of Kerry mentioned was my first where we did travel to Kilgarvan instead of tackling Molls Gap. I think we ended up doing 117 miles that day.

This is Padraig's 19th edition. I know some people that have a few more done. How many have you notched up?

Hey, great to see this.

I've recently bought my new and first racer (Giant, defy 3) and am enjoying 2-3 cycles a week at the moment. Aside from the usual cycling as a kid most of us did, I've never really done proper cycling, so the ring is a real goal for the year.

Looking forward to your tips in the coming months.

Hi just to clarify a previous submission and error that i posted to your website. Received confirmation that the Dingle 50 mile race staged September 4th 2010 " is a first place title only and is being awarded to Vassiliy" from race organiser Ken Dunne. Thanks to all the organisers for staging this truly great race that encompasses some of the best scenery in the country. Already looking forward to returning to next years Dingle race.

Yeah I know I'm in the same boat as you and had hoped to do a bit next year. I still can but definately agree that clubs will not be to inclined to host these 'sport races', we'll see.

Thanks for posting that. I dont race, but planned to next year under an A4 license. A lot of my cycling friends really enjoyed their first year of racing at this category. The proposed limitations not only make the grade less desireable for riders, but would seem to make it less desireable for clubs to host an A4 race. I would be worried that there would be fewer races next year as a result.
Given that the category seems to be viewed by those who raced in it as a success in its first year, it seems starange that CI would want to change that.

Hi to all, just to fill you in on my race experience re the 1st ever Dingle 50 mile Ultra running road race. Was fortunate to run a very satisfactory race from 65 starters I finished 3rd overall and will collect my 1st All Ireland Medal (silver).
The Climb over the Connor Pass was fab great views I was in 2nd place on the descent of the Pass at mile 19 only to be passed by Malcolm Gamble at mile 47.
Race Results 1 Vasily Neumerzhitskiy (Clonmel A/c)6:22:24
             2 Malcolm Gamble (Melbourne Australia)7:05:58
3 Shane James Whitty (SBR Ferns, Wexford)7:07:21
V hot race conditions from mile 24 onwards temperatures in the 70s.
In response to the question posed regarding my fathers participation in the Ras Tailteann : My dad Jim Whitty cycled his one and only Ras Tailteann in 1961. he was also successful in winning a Youths All Ireland for the 50 mile time trial.
He always had the fondest of memories for his participation in the Ras and especially his races in Kerry.

Had the good fortune to run to the peak of the Conor Pass from the Dingle side, the views are out of this world and well worth the effort. On September 4th 2010 will participate in the first ever Dingle Ultra 50 mile run starting outside of Camp and running over the Conor Pass into Dingle, out to Slea Head and finishing back in Dingle ; hopefully to finish all in one peace. Best wishes to all those taking part. By the way my father Jim Whitty (deceased 1993) was a very keen cyclist and was 2nd to Patsy Wall in the stage to Killorglin in the 1961 Ras Tailteann.

Record numbers cycle: An Post Tour de Burren

Ballyvaughan, Co Clare –1600 litres of water, 2000 metres of red tape, 4000 ‘hang sandwiches’, 180 ground marshals, 100 spare bicycle tubes, 1,700 cyclists, 2 tandems and one cycling legend were all part of the hugely successful An Post Tour de Burren which took place amid the spectacular scenery and glorious sunshine of North Clare on Saturday the 19th of June.

The Burren Cycling Club has already hosted six successful Tour de Burren spins and club spokesperson Patrick O’Donoghue was delighted that more cyclists than ever participated this year. According to Patrick,” We can’t believe it; we more than doubled our numbers. Last year over 800 cyclists registered but this year 1,700 took part. We are all volunteers working on this event and we’re thrilled that the numbers are growing, year on year. It’s very rewarding to be able to share this beautiful place with so many fellow cyclists. Cycling in the Burren is absolutely fantastic and visitors are made feel really welcome.”

Cycling legend Seán Kelly and broadcaster Ian Dempsey joined forces with over 1,700 cyclists for the Tour de Burren which is part of the An Post Cycle Series, promoted by An Post and the Irish Sports Council to encourage communities around the country to get on their bikes.

Seán Kelly is ambassador for the An Post Cycle Series and he was delighted with the turn out. According to Seán, “The fact that the An Post Tour de Burren has grown so dramatically in popularity speaks for itself. It is so well organised and the scenery is superb. The whole point of this series is to get people on their bikes. Today we saw young and old, people with disabilities, experienced cyclists and newcomers all having a great day. I really enjoyed taking part.”

Cyclists had three routes to choose from; the 10 km Aillwee Cave Family Loop which was all about fun, enjoyment and participation, the 60 Km Corkscrew Challenge which took cyclists from Ballyvaughan up Corkscrew Hill - a grade 2 King of the Mountains climb on the F.B.D Ras – through Doolin, on to Ballinalacken, and home via Fanore and Black Head to Ballyvaughan and the Burnin Burren spin which offered cyclists a 160km journey through North Clare on a route that took in a number of Grade 2 King of the Mountains climbs, one of which brought riders past the world famous Cliffs of Moher.

Supported by Clare Sports Partnership, the An Post Tour de Burren is designed to offer a variety of challenges. Cyclists with a disability are particularly welcome. European Hand Cycling Gold Medallist, Mark Rohan, took part in the 60km Corkscrew Challenge and Special Olympian Conrad McCollough also participated.

According to John Sweeney, the Coordinator of Clare Sports Partnership, “We got very positive feedback from all those who took part. Participants were very happy with the level of organisation and the An Post Tour de Burren has gained a reputation as a premium cycling event in Ireland that appeals to a wide variety of cyclists.”

Participants were able to avail of timing facilities, refreshments during and after the event, changing facilities, and the use of various support services along the routes. Thousands of litres of water were provided, 3,000 cups of tea were brewed and thousands of tired legs were massaged in a huge logistical operation where the needs of over 1,700 cyclists were met.

Broadcaster Ian Dempsey was the starter for all routes which added to the festival like atmosphere in Ballyvaughan and at the famous Monks Bar and Restaurant BBQ.

For Maureen Cleary of the Clare Tourism Forum, “The An Post Tour de Burren is more than a sporting occasion; it brings people from all over Ireland together and allows the local tourism sector to showcase all that it has to offer. The efforts of a whole community have made this a hugely successful event and I applaud the organisers for their dedication and hard work.”

John Treacy, CEO of the Irish Sports Council was keen to stress the importance of cycling as a means of exercise, “The whole purpose of the An Post series is to get people active. The Irish Sports Council supports this aim. Nationwide, over 8,000 people will participate in the entire An Post Cycle Series so they are a great way of encouraging people to train and they give everyone an opportunity to work to their own ability. Those who came out today enjoyed the beautiful Burren in June and had a great day’s exercise. What could be better?”

Hi there

I cycled rok last year on a mountain bike - my first time. I had a great day, we left killarney at7.30am & arrived in to gleneagle at 7.10pm - had loads of stops, but didnt eat too well so suffered in kenmare but made it up molls gap and it felt like we were floating once we got to torc cos we were home and we did the whole route and we didnt suffer the following day - which totally amazed me because I did expect some pain & soreness. I am hoping to get a lighter bike this year but I have just been out saturday and it felt great to be back on the saddle again. I have gone from "I have not cycled in years" person to a kind of "semi addict" kind a person which is strange! but good I guess. Good luck this year, I am looking forward to your views because, as a novice, we were overtaken so many times but pros that it will be interesting to see how you fare.

keep in touch!
