SUMMARY:Castlegregory Bikeathon Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 'Castlegregory Bikeathon Festival' 24 hour event is the first of its kind in Ireland and will be held in indoors Castlegregory, Co. Kerry next 17th/18th February. The top prize for the event is a whopping €10'000, with a second prize of €5'000 and third taking €1000. There will also be other cash prizes for various categories. The concept is simple. Teams of between 6 and 10 members will compete against each other indoors on stationary bikes (Wattbikes) over a 24 hour period with the team clocking up the most mileage taking home the top prize of €10’000. As this is a charity event, entry fees are in the form of sponsorship lines (ten cards per team - 100 lines at €2 each per card) so it costs clubs nothing to enter and will be a great way to test how all that winter spinning has paid off before the new season! Around the event the local community has come together and there will be B&B discounts, Bikeathon special offers, festival events, bar exemptions, discos, bands etc all coming together to make a real festival atmosphere against the backdrop of a great event with some jaw dropping prizes (festival events programme can be seen on our facebook page). The beneficiaries of the event are the JIGSAW mental health charity and also the local soccer team who are helping run the event. Even though this is a cycling event, anyone that wants to enter, regardless of sporting ability or background, is encouraged to contact the Castlegregory Bikeathon Committee to get their sponsorship packs. With a mixture of premier cycling teams, college teams, gaa teams, soccer teams & others already signed up, it's promising to be a super weekend in Castlegregory next February. With Killarney company 'iBike events' on board to ensure a top class, smooth running event and the cutting edge technology of the Wattbikes which will provide real time leader boards and super accurate distance readings this promises to be a really excellent event - an event type never before seen in Ireland!! Closing dates for entry is 1st January. 2012, with a closing date for entry fees of 16th January 2012.- Call now on 087-7434377 to confirm your teams place or email castlegregorybikeathon@gmail.com. Please see our website www.castlegregorybikeathon.com, our facebook page or email us on castlegregorybikeathon@gmail.com for further details. See www.wattbike.com for equipment info.

SUMMARY:Christmas Hamper Cycling Race
DESCRIPTION:Killorglin Cycling Club will host their annual Christmas Hamper Rides on Sunday 11th December. Sign on will take place in the Killorglin Rowing Club from 9:00am. The rides will get underway at 10:00am. There are two courses to choose from - a 55km ride that is largely flat and an 80km run that includes the climb at Farmers Bridge. The longer ride will be controlled by a lead car to the bottom of the Farmers Bridge climb. From there the ride is unregulated and the first three riders home get the first choice of the hampers. The first rider home from the 50km ride gets the next choice. There is then a raffle on the basis of sign-on numbers to distribute the remaining hampers. The day is designed to be a fun start to the new training season and to be as sociable as possible. While some riders will be motivated by the competitive juices more will be driven by the desire to make a bit of room for the Christmas excess to come. Tea, hot drinks and food will be available at the end of the ride in the Rowing Club. Showers and changing facilities are available in the Rowing Club. The sign-on fee for the spin is €10 for Cycling Ireland members and €20 for non-members. For more information keep an eye on www.killorglincycling.com Light refreshments afterwards, all are welcome. For further information contact Mary Concannon 087 2802071

SUMMARY:Slí Trá Lí
DESCRIPTION:The 2011 Tralee Cycling Club Leisure Tour ‘Slí Trá Lí’ takes place on Sunday, 11th September next from Hermitage Park, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. The club last held a leisure tour a number of years ago, and was also based in Lixnaw. Reaction at the time was overwhelmingly positive, and therefore we have decided to base ourselves in Hermitage Park again for this year’s event. There will be adequate parking available at Lixnaw’s sportsfield, and sign-on is scheduled to commence at 9a.m. The entry fee is €10, and all who wish to take part will be required to wear a helmet at all times when riding. Insurance for the event is also necessary, and anyone who does not have this can take out a one-day license for €10. The tour includes two routes; a 50 and a 100 kilometre circuit. Both start at Hermitage Park at 10.30a.m. and begin by passing through Lixnaw village before turning for Finuge. A left turn in Finuge will take riders into Listowel from the Greenville side, and therefore avoid most of the town traffic. Another left turn at the convent grotto in Listowel will take the peleton through Lisselton and on to Ballybunion. Another left before entering the seaside town will take us south-west towards the ferry bridge and on to Ballyduff. Skirting the village, the riders will take the ‘north road’ towards Ballyheigue and will enjoy a well deserved rest at ‘Barron’s Bunker’ where refreshments will be available. Following the rest stop, the routes will split to allow the 50K riders return to Lixnaw via Causeway village. The 100K route heads west, and takes the remaining riders around ‘Kerry Head’ where their climbing ability will be well tested. On descending into Ballyheigue, cyclists will pass through the village and take a right turn towards Ardfert. Passing through this village, the tours southern extent will be reached as the bunch touches Tralee Town by turning left, over the ‘Bracker O’Regan’ road, and dragging themselves up the last climb of the day at Listellick. Tired legs will take riders through Abbeydorney and on to Ballinclogher Cross where a right turn will bring everyone home. Refreshments, shower and changing facilities will be available again at the clubrooms at Hermitage Park, and all who complete the tour will receive a certificate to record their achievement. Hope to see you there!!!

SUMMARY:The Annual Castleisland Day Care cycle
DESCRIPTION:The annual Day Care cycle is taking place on Sunday the 4th of September at 10 am sharp from the Castleisland Rugby Club. It is the usual route which incorporates 10, 30 and 50 mile options that participants can decide on the day which one they wish to do. Minimum sponsorship or entry fee is 20 euro. Under 18s need to have parental /guardian permission to take part. We need to stress this year more so than other years that the event is not a race. There are numerous races coming up and there has been loads on during the year but this is not one of them as it not organised on the basis that people will be racing. This is primarily due to safety issues but it is also a day that people need to be encouraged along as there will be many new cyclists on the road for the event. If you feel that the event is too slow for you then you need to realise this now and we are asking you to use the day to cycle with others and encourage them along to finish the cycle which in itself is the achievement of the day in question. Sign on for the event is from 9 to 9.45 on the morning and refreshments will be provided on the route and at the finish where there will be entertainment provided. There is also a raffle for all sponsorships handed in at the start and various spot prizes. A new addition this year is a 5km walk starting 12.30pm with registration from 12 noon. Again minimum sponsorship or entry is 20 euro and it is hoped that people that would maybe not cycle would walk for this very worthy and local cause. We are looking forward to seeing you all on September 4th for an enjoyable and active day.

SUMMARY:Kingdom Bar – Classic League Round 4 – Sunday 11th July
DESCRIPTION:The race will leave The Killorglin Sports and Leisure Centre at 11:00 a.m. and will be neutralised until it gets on the circuit (approx 1 mile). There are then 9 laps of a 10.4 mile circuit with the riders finishing up the hill in Killorglin at the end of lap 9. Unusually for a race in Killorglin the circuit is flat. The highest point on the course is only 104m high and there is almost 5 miles in which to gain that height. A separate race for A3 and A4 riders, on the same circuit, will leave the sports centre 3 minutes after the Classic league and will be neutralised until the riders are on the circuit. They will then complete 5 laps of the circuit and will finish up the hill in Killorglin. Sign – on is open from 9:30a.m. until 10:30a.m. at the Killorglin Sports and Leisure Centre.

SUMMARY:An Post Tour de Burren
DESCRIPTION:An Post Tour de Burren 2010 ready to Kick Off. In 2009, the An Post Tour de Burren attracted 850 cyclists over three leisure distances – 10km , 60km and 160km. This year, the Tour (part of the An Post Cycle Series), will once again attract a large number, including Sean Kelly and Ian Dempsey, to this leisure cycle in North Clare on the 19th June. The three routes will cater for all abilities. Closing date for applications is Friday 11th June. The 10km Aillwee Cave Family Spin is the ideal route for the family that takes the cyclists from the village of Ballyvaughan to Aillwee Cave and back to the village over a green road. Last year, this had a real ‘Closed Road’ feel to it with the Local Garda Car leading the Peloton. At €2 per cyclists, this is the ideal route for all the family. To celebrate the family spin, Aillwee Cave have decided to let ‘All Kids Go Free’ to its attractions over the weekend. If you fancy something a bit more challenging, then why not try the ‘Corkscrew Challenge’. This 60km cycle will take you up the famous Corkscrew Hill, into Lisdoonvarana & Doolin and then hope along the magnificent coastal route of Fanore / Black Head. This spin is well worth the challenge. €30 Finally, for the more adventurous, it must be the Burnin’ Burren. This spin is a diverse 160km spin that takes in several climbs and the towns and villages of North Clare (Bellharbour, Carron, Lisdoonvarna, Kilfenora, Corifin, Ennistymon, Lahinch, Liscannor, Cliffs of Moher, Doolin and back along the coast to Ballyvaughan). €30 As with all the Cycle Series events, the An Post Tour de Burren will be well marshalled and there will also be a number of food and water stops. All entrants will receive a tee-shirt and other goodies. In 2009, all proceeds from the tour went straight back into sport in County Clare. A number of projects that benefitted were: Disability Sport (SIDO Programme) & Safe Cycling in Schools (Joint initiative with An Taisce, Green Schools). There will also be an optional BBQ after you finish your spin in Monks Bar. There is a extra cost on this. See the website below for cost in the coming week. Please see www.burrencyclingclub.com for more details.

SUMMARY:Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2010
DESCRIPTION:Registrations are now being taken for the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2010! Taking place on Saturday, July 3rd 2010, the event, sponsored by Radio Kerry’s Community Fund, is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Munster and will see thousands of leisure cyclists experience a fun and rewarding day’s cycling, while at the same time fundraising for worthy Charities. This year’s six beneficiaries have just been announced, all of whom provide vital services for people in need in the Kerry area. They are as follows: Kerry Parents and Friends Association Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club Recovery Haven – Comfort & Care for Cancer Enable Ireland Kerry Irish Wheelchair Association – Killarney/South Kerry Branch Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre The 112 mile leisure cycle takes place around the picturesque Ring of Kerry and to date the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has raised over €3.5 million for Kerry Charities and after reaching a record number of cyclists last year when over 3,000 people took part, they are hoping to sign up even more this year. Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Organising Committee stated “Last year was amazing in terms of the numbers participating and the sum of over €450,000 raised. This year we have chosen Charities that do amazing work in our county and the need for funds is as great as ever.” Cathal added “As the evenings get longer more and more people will be taking to the outdoors for their exercise. I would like to urge everyone who is dusting off their bicycle to think about joining us on this year’s cycle. There’s plenty of time for people of all fitness levels to get fit for the cycle, have fun meeting like minded people and at the same time, fundraise for Charities based in their communities.” As well as the six main charities, a further fifteen Kerry charities will also receive a donation from the cycle; Friends of St Josephs Home; Tribal Trust - Kenmare; Ballybunion Community Centre; Heartbeat Killarney - Kerry; Kerry Mental Health Association; Emigrant Support Housing Assoc; Irish Dogs for the Disabled; Kerry Cancer Support Group; Castleisland Day Care Centre Ltd, Kerry Life Education Ltd, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland – Mid West/South Region; Killarney Water Rescue; IMNDA Care and Research - Motor Neurone Disease; Brothers of Charity Southern Services; Abbeyfeale District Search & Rescue. Melanie O’Sullivan, Sales & Marketing Manager, Radio Kerry added “We are very happy to reprise our role as main sponsor of the Cycle in 2010 and to see 20 Kerry Charities benefiting from this year’s event. As well as the vital funds raised it is an excellent opportunity for these Charities to create more awareness for the work that they do. Radio Kerry is happy to assist with facilitating this awareness campaign through the sponsorship of the Ring of Kerry Cycle.” Further information on all of the Charities can be found on the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle Website www.ringofkerrycycle.ie. People interested in participating in the actual cycle can register online on the website and all Postal Applications can be sent to The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle, PO Box 115, Killarney Post Office, New Street, Killarney. Enquiries can also be made by phone to (064) 6671900. Anyone wishing to make a direct donation can also do so by using these contacts.
