The Dingle Cycling Club are spreading the word regarding our annual Dingle Cycling Challenge on Saturday May 5th in conjunction with Feile na Bealtaine. So please come and join us at 9.00am from the marina.
The event comprises of 110km of Westkerrys spectacular scenery including the ever so challenging but ever so beautiful Conor Pass and the Slea Head route.
Last year we were joined by an outstanding 150 cyclists and this year we hope to host over 200 enthusiastic participants ( the ideal preparation for the ring of kerry! ) Most importantly it enables you to contribute to our chosen charity Camphill Community: to build their new much needed residence in Dingle.
All cyclists are invited to join us afterwards for eats and live music from The Candida 10 piece Brass Band at 9.00pm Dick Mack’s Yard, Green Street,

Came across a fantastic picture from the Graham Watson Archive recently of Sean Kelly leading the bunch through the Gap of Dunloe during the 1986 Nissan Classic. Having cycled that road a few weeks ago, I can testify, it is not easy :)

2002 Tralee CC Leisure Tour

On of my highlights of 2011 was being present for the Currow CC Press Launch for the two An Post Ras stages that would be finishing and beginning the  in Castleisland at the end of May in 2011. The press launch was held on the 2nd of May and after the usual photographs and smiles the party adjourned to Con’s bar in Castleisland, where there was a Terrace Talk interview that Weeshie Fogarty held with Mick Murphy, who was also present for the launch. I got a chance to recently listen to an audio interview Gene Mangan gave to Weeshie Fogarty of Terrace Talk in 2010. [Link to interview here]. A fascinating story and an incredible record for a man from Killorglin having won the Rás Tailteann in 1955 and is the youngest winner of the competition at only 18 years old. Gene went on to 12 stages of this great race over the years. Some great information about Gene out there, you should check out the following links:

The 2012 An Post Rás was launched in Dublin on Thursday 26th of January with the help of former winners Mick Murphy and Gene Mangan. For more details on the route check out the website. A bit disappointing that it does not come to Kerry but here’s hoping for a return in 2012.

Well done to all who participated in the Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle to Castleisland on Saturday 7th, close to 70 people took part. Weather was excellent for the venture. Congratulations especially to Sean Dowling and Aidan O Halloran, the youngest participants, who were well up for the challenge. Thanks to the Gardai for their guidance throughout the cycle, Paul Byrne for driving the Cycle Control Car at a speed which he may not be used to!! Following a short break in Castleisland we returned home and the journey continued to The Windmill Bar where Tom Quane provided Tea/Coffee and hot food and a deserved drink, thanks Tom. An enjoyable day was had by all.

Jimmy Duffy Memorial 2012

Calling all cyclists, dust down the bikes as the Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle takes place January 7th at 11:00am from St. Pats GAA Club, Blennerville. On a day that looked as if was going to be absolutely miserable, 68 hardy souls braved it to ride the Killorglin CC Christmas Hamper Rides.  Yet in spite of leaden skies and the dire prophesy of Met Eireann the morning brightened as soon as the event got underway.

Given the advanced state of cabin fever most of our riders are suffering from this winter it was only the Trojan effort of lead car driver John Mangan that managed to keep the average speed to the bottom of the climb to an average of 20mph.  When he released the control at the bottom of the Farmers Bridge climb is was every man for himself.  The outcome would have made a good days racing at Kerry Group Rás Mumhan.  In the end, two grizzled warhorses came home together clear of the chase group.  Paul Griffin, Tralee BC, got the better of Denis Lynch, Kanturk Town CC.  A short while later Mattie Slattery Killarney CC lead the chasing group almost 20 riders home.  This group contained the winner of the finest prize of the day – the pair of Oakley Jawbone sport eyewear.  Jack Sullivan made the pilgrimage from Beare Island to win the Melanie Joy Opticians sponsored prize for the first Killorglin CC rider home.

The second group on the road undertook the 55km loop.  They stayed together until the last six miles.  A five-man group went clear at that stage and they were lead home by newcomer to the sport Greg Whelan, Killarney CC.

Meanwhile a group of Anarchists attacked the best-laid plans of the event organisers and decided to have their own private event.  Despite starting with the main group they valiantly sidestepped the climb and took the short route home.  These radicals were guided in by Anthony O Connor, Killorglin CC who was pushed along by a contingent from Currow CC and Killorglin CC.

Following some hot food and refreshments, the prizes were handed out.  The 25 prizes are laid out and the first three riders home in the main event followed by the first rider home in the short rider and then the free radical winner chose what they wanted.  The remainder of the prizes are the raffled between everyone who signed on and the volunteers who assisted at the event.

Prizes for the Killorglin CC Christmas Rides were presented by; Ring of Kerry Lamb, Kerry Group, Cliffords sand & Gravel, M & J Kelliher Oils Ltd, Boyles Hardware Killorglin, Champs  Eurospar, Mulvihills Pharmacy, Kissanes Shop, Mosca McGillycuddy & Associates, Peter Clendennan, Motion Cycles, HP Nutrition and a variety of club members.

The ‘Castlegregory Bikeathon Festival’ 24 hour event is the first of its kind in Ireland and will be held in indoors Castlegregory, Co. Kerry next 17th/18th February. The top prize for the event is a whopping €10’000, with a second prize of €5’000 and third taking €1000. There will also be other cash prizes for various categories.

The concept is simple. Teams of between 6 and 10 members  will compete against each other indoors on stationary bikes (Wattbikes) over a 24 hour period with the team clocking up the most mileage taking home the top prize of €10’000. As this is a charity event, entry fees are in the form of sponsorship lines (ten cards per team – 100 lines at €2 each per card) so it costs clubs nothing to enter and will be a great way to test how all that winter spinning has paid off before the new season!

Around the event the local community has come together and there will be B&B discounts, Bikeathon special offers, festival events, bar exemptions, discos, bands etc all coming together to make a real festival atmosphere against the backdrop of a great event with some jaw dropping prizes (festival events programme can be seen on our facebook page). The beneficiaries of the event are the JIGSAW mental health charity and also the local soccer team who are helping run the event.

Even though this is a cycling event, anyone that wants to enter, regardless of sporting ability or background, is encouraged to contact the Castlegregory Bikeathon Committee to get their sponsorship packs. With a mixture of premier cycling teams, college teams, gaa teams, soccer teams & others already signed up, it’s promising to be a super weekend in Castlegregory next February. With Killarney company ‘iBike events’ on board to ensure a top class, smooth running event and the cutting edge technology of the Wattbikes which will provide real time leader boards and super accurate distance readings this promises to be a really excellent event – an event type never before seen in Ireland!!

Killorglin Cycling Club will host their annual Christmas Hamper Rides on Sunday 11^th December.  Sign on will take place in the Killorglin Rowing Club from 9:00am.  The rides will get underway at 10:00am.  There are two courses to choose from – a 55km ride that is largely flat and an 80km run that includes the climb at Farmers Bridge.

The longer ride will be controlled by a lead car to the bottom of the Farmers Bridge climb.  From there the ride is unregulated and the first three riders home get the first choice of the hampers.  The first rider home from the 50km ride gets the next choice.  There is then a raffle on the basis of sign-on numbers to distribute the remaining hampers.

The day is designed to be a fun start to the new training season and to be as sociable as possible.  While some riders will be motivated by the competitive juices more will be driven by the desire to make a bit of room for the Christmas excess to come.

Tea, hot drinks and food will be available at the end of the ride in the Rowing Club.  Showers and changing facilities are available in the Rowing Club.

The sign-on fee for the spin is €10 for Cycling Ireland members and €20 for non-members.

Tralee Cycling Club have launched their new website. Well done to the guys there because it looks great.

The 2011 Tralee Cycling Club Leisure Tour ‘Slí Trá Lí’ takes place on Sunday, 11th September next from Hermitage Park, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. The club last held a leisure tour a number of years ago, and was also based in Lixnaw. There will be adequate parking available at Lixnaw’s sportsfield, and sign-on is scheduled to commence at 9a.m. The entry fee is €10, and all who wish to take part will be required to wear a helmet at all times when riding. Insurance for the event is also necessary, and anyone who does not have this can take out a one-day license for €10.

The tour includes two routes; a 50 and a 100 kilometre circuit. Both start at Hermitage Park at 10.30a.m. and begin by passing through Lixnaw village before turning for Finuge. A left turn in Finuge will take riders into Listowel from the Greenville side, and therefore avoid most of the town traffic. Another left turn at the convent grotto in Listowel will take the peleton through Lisselton and on to Ballybunion. Another left before entering the seaside town will take us south-west towards the ferry bridge and on to Ballyduff. Skirting the village, the riders will take the ‘north road’ towards Ballyheigue and will enjoy a well deserved rest at ‘Barron’s Bunker’ where refreshments will be available.

Following the rest stop, the routes will split to allow the 50K riders return to Lixnaw via Causeway village. The 100K route heads west, and takes the remaining riders around ‘Kerry Head’ where their climbing ability will be well tested. On descending into Ballyheigue, cyclists will pass through the village and take a right turn towards Ardfert. Passing through this village, the tours southern extent will be reached as the bunch touches Tralee Town by turning left, over the ‘Bracker O’Regan’ road, and dragging themselves up the last climb of the day at Listellick. Tired legs will take riders through Abbeydorney and on to Ballinclogher Cross where a right turn will bring everyone home.

Refreshments, shower and changing facilities will be available again at the clubrooms at Hermitage Park, and all who complete the tour will receive a certificate to record their achievement. Hope to see you there!!!

The annual Day Care cycle is taking place on Sunday the 4th of September at 10 am sharp from the Castleisland Rugby Club.

It is the usual route which incorporates 10, 30 and 50 mile options that participants can decide on the day which one they wish to do. Minimum sponsorship or entry fee is 20 euro. Under 18s need to have parental /guardian permission to take part. We need to stress this year more so than other years that the event is not a race. There are numerous races coming up and there has been loads on during the year but this is not one of them as it not organised on the basis that people will be racing. This is primarily due to safety issues but it is also a day that people need to be encouraged along as there will be many new cyclists on the road for the event. If you feel that the event is too slow for you then you need to realise this now and we are asking you to use the day to cycle with others and encourage them along to finish the cycle which in itself is the achievement of the day in question. Sign on for the event is from 9 to 9.45 on the morning and refreshments will be provided on the route and at the finish where there will be entertainment provided. There is also a raffle for all sponsorships handed in at the start and various spot prizes. A new addition this year is a 5km walk starting 12.30pm with registration from 12 noon. Again minimum sponsorship or entry is 20 euro and it is hoped that people that would maybe not cycle would walk for this very worthy and local cause. We are looking forward to seeing you all on September 4th for an enjoyable and active day.

The first 120 Km cycle of the ring of North Kerry takes place on Saturday 27th August 2011. This fundraising and leisure event is promoted by the recently established local Finuge Freewheelers and Ballybunion Sea Rescue committees, with registration of the participants taking place at the at Finuge GAA ground Clubrooms from 7.30 to 9.30 a.m. and there will be food and water stations located along the route. The organizing committee have also incorporated the option of a shorter route of 70 Km. into this event thus catering for all participants. Further details available from 087 – 6943005.

Great to see in the Kerryman recently that almost €450,000 will be granted to fund a proposed “international standard” mountain biking trail close to Glenflesk. Fantastic news for the county.

The last day of this challenge and finished it off with an 18 mile cycle around Ardfert,Barrow, Fenit and back to Tralee via The Spa.

Can’t believe that the challenge is now done but I’m seriously looking forward to putting the feet up tomorrow to watch stage 9 of the Tour de France. I did find the challenge manageable but for some events that I should have been fresher I did find the legs tired which was understandable but at least a good few recovery spins before the Ring of Kerry meant that I was fresh for that. Found that it is achievable to cycle every day but probably not practical to do in the long term.

Ended up with doing 633 Miles over the 30 days with a total cycling time of 38 hours 20 minutes averaging roughly 16.5 miles per hour over the entire mileage and averaged 21 miles per day. Not bad for an old man :)

Now for some well needed bike cleaning …

The second last day of the challenge and finally some break in the weather for a change. Took out the mountain bike and headed for Ardfert, The Spa before heading back to Tralee with a total of 12.5 miles on the clock.

Another wet day but still managed to get 28 miles in. Legs felt strongest today since hte Ring of Kerry spin and some life seems to be coming back into them. Went in the direction fo Farranfore, Ballyfinnane and home with a strong breeze at my back from Castlemaine.

Day 27 and the wet weather couldn’t dampen my need to go for a spin today. Ended up with 21 miles of mostly quiet north Kerry roads and most of it in the rain. I took the mountain bike as it bothers me less if that gets wet as opposed to being on a racing bike and I feel safer on it on wet roads. Today’s route was Ardfert Ballyheigue, Kilmoyley and back Home via Ardfert.

Day 26 and a wet start to a cycle turned out to be quite an dry and tough spin even though it was relatively short at close to 18 Miles. Went from Ardfert to Barrow, Fenit and back to Tralee via The Spa. It was quite windy but still managed to pull in a relatively good time of 56 minutes.

Hard to imagine it’s day 25. This morning’s 15 miles spin bought me in the direction of Abeydorney before heading back towards Ardfert and back into Tralee. Other than nearly getting run over in Abbeydorney by some lunatic behind the wheel I enjoyed it.

Woke up this morning with tireder legs than expected as they felt good yesterday evening after 106 miles but the night’s recovery had not improved them. Under normal circumstances the feet would be up for the day but at this stage I just got on the bike. 11 miles of very easy pedalling around Tralee town on the mountain bike. No land speed records broken today but another day down.

Today was day 23 and what better way to spend it than cycling around the Ring of Kerry as part of the 28th Annual Ring of Kerry Cycle. Was a little apprehensive as to how the legs would hold after 22 days cycling in a row but I do think that the mileage in the legs made the event that bit even more enjoyable. I was cycling it with some buddies so was taking it pretty easy for the day in general. The morning was a little bit dull but dry. I was astounded at the numbers involved and found it really difficult to get a parking spot in the morning even though I though I knew all the “good spots”.

Really enjoyed the entire day with the highlights either being a pint of beer shandy in An Siopa Dubh in Castlecove about half way around the Ring or else the Jacuzzi at the end of a long day’s cycling.

Day 22 and the final day before the Ring of Kerry so took easy. Headed off for an early morning spin whilst the weather held in the direction of Ardfert, The Spa before heading back to Tralee. Legs feel good and looking forward to tomorrow’s spin.

Day 21 and this evening was a supposed relaxed spin with the club. Setting out with the best of intentions to take it easy does not guarantee that it will remain so. From a gentle start some of us got impatient and headed off for some lively cycling. Ended up with a nice 31 miles this evening. Left Tralee and headed off towards Farranfore and Castleisland and back to Tralee. Tomorrow will be an easy day before the Ring of Kerry on Saturday.

Today was the Kerry Time Trial Championship which was organized by Killorglin Cycling Club in association with www.ibike.ie and starting in Tralee.  It was 20K and the same route as the Kerry Time Trial League, so from Ballycarthy Roundabout to Castleisland and back. There were 19 starters and I was off in position number 8. The outward journey had the wind to my back and the first 10K was covered in 14 minutes but turning at the roundabout for the return was a real eye opener with a cold and lively breeze straight into my face. I really suffered on the way home and ended up with a time of 33:46 for the 20K and ended up finishing mid table. A bit disappointing considering my last time  (33:04) but I am happy that every ounce of energy was left on the road and I could not have given any more.

The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle – 112 miles of pedal power raising funds for local charities

Tyres are pumped, padded shorts are ready, water bottles are being filled and most likely some prayers are being said. The 28th annual Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle gets underway at 6am this Saturday, July 2nd starting from the Racecourse, Ross Road, Killarney. Over 4,000 cyclists from all over Ireland and beyond have already registered on line for the 112 mile leisure cycle on one of Kerry’s most picturesque routes.

Among the participants this year will be An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister for Arts, Heritage & Gaeltacht Jimmy Denihan, Sean Kelly, MEP and former Munster & Republic of Ireland rugby player Mick Galway.

While the majority of cyclists will complete the 112 miles on Saturday some will take a more leisurely approach choosing to spread it over a couple of days stoppping off along the way to enjoy some legendary Kerry hospitality! The people of Kerry are invited and encouraged to come out along the route in suppport of the cyclists.

Radio Kerry’s Saturday Show with Francis Jones will broadcast live from Colaiste na Sceilge, Cahersiveen, the first major stop en route, between 11am and 2pm. Francis will speak to a selection of the cyclists taking part as well as to some of the volunteers crews providing refreshments and a morale boost to prepare them for the second half.

Since the first cycle in 1984 the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has raised over €4.1 million for over 100 charities. The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle embodies a real sense of community. While fundraising is the major focus of the cycle also worthy of note is the profile of cyclists of all ages and experience who participate and the huge team of volunteers from across a wide variety of community groups, charities and businesses who all work together to contribute to the success of the event.
This year seven principal charities will benefit from the funds raised by the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle are The Irish Kidney Association, Kerry Parents & Friends Association, Friends of St Josephs House, Recovery Haven, The Irish Society for Autism, Skellig Stars and The IHCPT. 15 other charities will also benefit from funds raised through the cycle.

Legs felt good this morning after a couple of days doing handy spins today so more of an effort was put in to today’s 18 miles around Blennerville, Caherleheen, Flemby and back to Tralee. Tested myself on a few short sharp climbs and feel ready for road for the Kerry Time Trial Championships tomorrow evening. Bring it on!

Day 18 and another handy one round tralee town on the mountain bike, another recovery spin and 12 miles on the clock, ready to start upping is slowely again tomorrow.

Today was a handy spin with just 10 miles on the clock. Resting my legs for the Kerry Time Trial Championships this coming wednesday. Legs feeling tired so trying to get the most out of some recovery time. Headed off round The Kerries, Blennerville and Back into Tralee again.

On with the second half of the challenge and a mild and breezy Saturday provided the backdrop for a beautiful 20 miles out towards Ballyheigue, Kilmoyley and back home via Ardfert.

Today was day 15 and my legs were extremely tired both off the bike and on the bike. I took it as easy as possible to try and get some recovery into them before next week’s cycles. I headed off at a very leisurely pace towards The Kerries, Blennerville, Ballyard and back home. I finished up with a handy 10 miles on my mountain bike in a time that I would normally do 20 on a racing bike but I hope that the recovery day will do me good.

Half Way on the 30 day challenge an the following are my stats so far…

Today was day 14 and I cycled 40 miles on a fairly lively club spin. We headed towards Castleisland, Hedley’s Bridge, and back home via Lyrecrompane.

Legs were pretty tired this evening. Tomorrow will be another recovery day before hopefully some nice spins at the weekend.

Today was an uneventful 10 miles pedalling with tired legs and mostly into a headwind. Headed off around The Kerries, Blennerville, Ballyard and back to Tralee. There were a few attempts at rain but it held off thankfully. Unlucky for some but for me I was happy to get home dry.

• Even if you have registered already you must sign in at one of the designated times to collect your bike label which will ensure your access to the food stops and passage by the Stewards at checkpoints. Please bring your Entry Ticket with you.

• The emergency number for the day is 087 – 1440054 (in operation between 6.00am and 9.00pm on the day of the cycle)

Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle Committee

Got in 15 handy miles today when the sun eventually decided to come out this evening. Headed off in the direction of Ardfert, The Spa and back home by the Kerries. Approaching the half way point of the challenge and finding it not that difficult to fit in at least 45 minutes of a cycle a day. The biggest hurdles are the weather and my tired legs. Will post up stats on miles done and hours on saddle once I get to half way mark on day 15.

Did a very late evening 10 miles today. Weather was very bad and I waited as long as I could to see if the worst of it would pass. I think it was a good choice as I got a mostly dry 45 minutes before it started pouring again. Went out on the mountain bike round the town. Let’s hope tomorrow improves!

Day 10 today was the Currow CC Annual leisure tour and 63 miles of cycling in glorious weather for a change. I was reminded about the song “I could have danced all night” because I sure felt that I could have cycled all day today. The spin today left Currow, headed for Tralee, Castlemaine, Milltown, Killorglin, Killarney and back to Currow via Farranfore. The pace was mostly controlled which is only right for a leisure cycle but I did get an opportunity to stretch my legs ascending the Tralee side of the hill to Castlemaine as well as the way home from Killarney which was lively enough for anyone’s level. Legs felt good and appreciated the last number of days when I took it easy.

1/3 third of the way into the challenge and I have found great benefit to having cycled the last 10 days in a row. I do feel stronger than when I started. I think the key so far was knowing when to take an easy day when I needed it. I will be intereted to see if I find the next 20 days as straightforward.

A late evening 10 mile spin on the mountain bike today. Took as much an off road route I could without travelling too far. Headed towards Cockleshell Road On Tralee Bay.

Legs feel good after two days of relatively light spins in advance of tomorrow morning’s leisure spin at Currow

Got in a sneaky cycle before work today. Took the option to do a recovery ride and rest up my legs after a busy week that included both a race and a time trial. Headed off aorund the Kerries, into Blennerville and back home via the town park. Ended up with just over 10 miles on the mountain bike. Similial enough spin planned for tomorrow then weather dependent I will do either a 60 mile or a 90 mile on Sunday.

Today was a club spin and legs were tired but cycling in the group made it a little easier. We ended up doing 35 Miles (56 k). We left Tralee and headed for Castleisland, Farranfore, Castlemaine and back to Tralee. The pace was pretty high with the spin completed in 1 hour and 45 mins. I got a twinge of a cramp in my right thigh ascending the last climb after Castlemaine so sat up a little until I got home.

In conjunction with the Ring of Kerry cycle weekend, this year will see the inaugural Ring of Kerry Family Pedal in Park 10k Cycle, which takes place Friday 1st July. Why not bring along family members to Killarney National Park and join in the fun on the eve of the Ring of Kerry Cycle! All cyclists must wear a helmet and children U-10 accompanied by an adult. Registration is at 6:30pm and cycle at 7:30pm. Cost is €1 per person and funds received will be donated to this years Ring of Kerry Cycle designated charities.

Day 6 and legs are getting used to being tired but it doesn’t seem to bother me when on the bike. Today was the last event of this year’s Kerry Time Trial League, same course 12.5 miles (20K), from the Ballycarthy roundabout to the Castleisland Bypass roundabout and back. It was a windy evening with the advantage on the way out but tough on the way back. I started at a steady pace and tried to keep it going sparing some energy for the final few miles which I knew would be tough.

I ended up 5th out of 9 with a time of 33 minutes and 4 seconds which was over a minute improvement on my last attempt at the course. The Kerry Time Trial Championship is on in two weeks time so I will hope to improve on my time again if I can.

After 6 events, Cathal Moynihan was overall winner of the 2011 Kerry Time Trial League held in Tralee. He crowned his victory on the last evening of the league with a very fast sub 30 minute 20 Kilometers.

Day 5, the first of the wet days of the challenge and I literally got soaked wet. I ended up doing nearly 13 miles and was very glad to get home. I headed for Ardfert, and came back to Tralee via The Spa.

It wasn't quite as bad as this but it felt like it.

Sunshine today so got out this evening and did a beautiful 18 leisurely miles. Headed off on the road towards Castleisland and turned right a few miles before it, coming back onto the Farranfore road and back to Tralee. Finding the challenge straightforward so far. My legs were tired from yesterday’s race but the sunshine made it really easy to head out.

Padraig Brennan, from Waterville first got involved with the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in 1991, the eighth year of the event. Since then he has successfully completed the 112-mile route 18 times. 2011 will be his 19th time to participate in the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in aid of local Kerry charities.

As far back as 1991 Marian 0′Neill asked Padraig to participate in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. No other local cyclist was taking part so his plan was to cycle with a group from Waterville to Caherdaniel but he ended up traveling as far as Sneem. He collected £120 that year for the Irish Cancer Society (South Kerry Daffodil Nurse).

Padraig said “At that time there were only a few hundred cyclists taking part and I decided there and then that my next involvement would be to do the complete the Ring at some stage”. He started to do more training on the bike and in 1993 he took part in his first full Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.

In the early years Padraig cycled with a few people from Caherciveen, Jack McCarthy, Jackie O’ Sullivan, Caitriona McSweeney and others. Gradually Anne Marie Dundon, Joe Curran and a few more people from Waterville got involved also. Padraig is now a member of the Caherciveen/Killorglin CUCC.

Initially when Padraig started out there was just one nominated charity and a few hundred cyclists. Nowadays he is delighted to see that there are a number of charities nominated each year and the number of cyclists has increased to thousands, making the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle the biggest one-day charity cycle in Ireland.

Over the past 20 years Padraig has cycled to raise funds for many charities such as the Kerry Diabetic Association, Kerry Downs Syndrome Association, Kerry Parents and Friends and Skellig Stars among others. “I always find people very generous with their contributions and I get good sponsorship every year. You can take in the magnificent scenery on a fine day but of course you can get a bad day weather-wise, which we got in 2005 when we had wind/rain almost from start to finish but when I got into Killarney that evening the sun shone!”

It typically takes Padraig between 7 and 7.5 hrs, actually on the bike, to complete the 112-mile route. However he recalls, “I think in 1997 we did not cycle Molls Gap. Instead we went onto Kilgarvan as Jackie Healy Rae had been elected TD for South Kerry that year!”

Padraig and usual cycling buddy, Joe Curran, normally travel up in the morning. They leave about 6am and their first stop is at Derry/Mary T Doyles Eloyd House, where they get a great welcome and a hearty Irish breakfast to get them started for the day.

They have made many friends down through the years and still meet a lot of the same faces every year. Padraig says that the part of the Ring of Kerry Cycle he finds the hardest is from Molls Gap into Killarney, “as you’re coming to the end of the cycle and the legs are not pushing the pedals as you would want them to be. It’s also downhill, windy and you’re braking as well”.

2011 will be Padraig Brennan’s 19th Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity cycle in succession and he says he is looking forward to it “as if it was my first”! He says his only disappointment is that it happens to be over so quickly. “You’re the most part of a year gearing yourself up for it, then it’s over in hours and there is a long 12 months to the next one. Long may it last and I hope to keep doing it as long as the legs keep turning the pedals”.

The 2010 Cycle attracted over 4,000 international cyclists of all ages and experience, taking part in a fun and rewarding day’s cycling, raising over €500,000.

Today was day 3 of the challenge and I competed in the 46th Annual John Drumm Cup held in Currow. The race was three laps of a nearly ten mile circuit (see route below) and it totalled 29 miles. I was competing in the A4 category which had a big enough field of nearly 50 riders.

The race was pretty fast by my standards averaging 24 mph (38 kph) over the circuit. But I held on in the bunch at the finish, was in a 3 man breakaway at one stage and was in 2nd place with about 200 meters to go but bad positioning as the bunch swamped me on both sides which made it impossible to get a good position for the finish. Here is the route for anyone interested, as you can see pretty flat but there was a slight dig at the end.

As the Drumm Cup is on today in Currow I was doing a few searches for it and found some interesting images from the Kennelly archive from the 1967 Drumm Cup, which was starting in Castleisland.

Managed 12 miles on the Mountain bike and took it easy in preperation for the Drumm Cup race tomorrow in Currow. Today’s route was around the Kerries, Blennerville and Caherleheen and back into town via the Lee river pathway which looked beautiful in the sunshine and did not feel like I was in Tralee.

In an effort to keep the motivation going as the weather is bad, I have set myself a challenge of doing 30 cycles over the next 30 days with only the following rule, that each cycle can’t be any shorter that 10 miles. I figure that even on the days when I am tiredest that a gentle 10 mile cycle should be manageable.

So Day 1…

Managed 14 miles on the mountain bike. Weather was cool but sunny. The route I took was from Tralee, to Bullock Hill, Listellick, onto the Listowel road and back into Tralee.

Only 29 days left, this will be a cake walk.

Aghadoe provided the breathtaking backdrop to today’s launch of the 28^th annual Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.  The 112 mile leisure cycle, which to date has raised €4.1 million for over 100 charities, takes place on Saturday, July 2^nd 2011.

The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Munster. The 2010 Cycle attracted over 4,000 international cyclists of all ages and experience, taking part in a fun and rewarding day’s cycling, raising over €500,000.

PRO Cathal Walsh is looking forward to another successful year of the Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in 2011.  He said that he hoped that the combined efforts of the Cycle committee, the teams of volunteers from the charities and the participating cyclists will once again result in a successful outcome for all concerned.  He encouraged everyone to come out on July 2^nd and support this event in whatever way they can.

The 2011 www.ringofkerrycycle.ie website recently went live with all the information required to take part including registration, training tips, insurance and contact details for the principal charities.

I took part in last wednesdays 4th event in the Kerry Time Trial League, with it being my first time trial since last year. I’m not that experienced in Time Trials but I am used to pushing it over various distances when training on my own. There were 10 competitors over the 20K course, and with a somewhat moderate cross breeze for both the out and return journeys it was obvious that the speed was going to be fast. I had not been doing as much training over the past number of weeks as I would have liked so I was interested in seeing what my form was, but at the same time I did not want to blow a gasket, so with no heart rate monitor I decided to run it at 80-90% based on feeling only and see how I got on. I ended up doing pretty well averaging 36K over the 20K with a time of 34 minutes, but was very impressed with the competition given that I came 7th out of the ten riders. So next week will be a repeat performance but hopefully I can move up a place or 2. And no more of this 90% attitude either, next week I will be bringing the pain :)

I would encourage anyone from any cycing level or background to turn up next Wednesday.

The feature event of the weekend is the 46th John Drumm Memorial Cup Race on Sunday at 1.15 pm but we have a range of supporting events as well to accomodate all standards of cyclists. The first event is the Sliabh Luachra 15km time trial on Saturday night. This is open to all catagories and has cash prizes for the first 6 with unplaced prizes for A2, A3, A4, Ladies, Under 16, Under 14, Over 40 and Over 50. Sign on is from 6.30 to 7.20 with the first rider off at 7.45. This is almost one lap of the race circuit for the following day.

Sunday’s action commences with the underage racing starting at 12.15. These are races for Under 14 and Under 12. These will be held on a 4 mile circuit with 3 laps for the Under 14s and 1 for the Under 12s. Prizes will be for the first 6 in each race with the best unplaced Under 13 and Under 11 also winning a trophy.

Moving onto the adult and Under 16 racing then which the time has changed from previous years. It will be the A1 + A2 riders the first to face the starter at 1.15pm. These will have 6 laps of the race circuit. The A3s will be next, racing over 4 laps and finally the A4s covering 3 laps. If there is a small number signing on in any catagory, races may have to be merged but hopefully this wont happen. There are cash prizes for the first 8 in each race with the first 3 unplaced A2s also being rewarded. Under 16s will follow the A4 Cyclists.

The John Drumm Cup commerates a very famous local cyclist who dies in a trajic farm accident in 1965. This was only weeks after completing the Ras Tailteann with great distinction having the honour of being the first Munster man overall in the race. At that time the provincial councils would award medals for this achievement and this medal was incorporated onto the impressive cup. The first winner in 1966 was Gene Mangan and many of the great names of Irish cycling have won it since right up to last year with Michael Fitzgerald taking over the mantle from Sam Bennett who had three wins in the event. Paul Griffin also hasd an excllent record in the event. John Drumm himself has the rare distinction of not only having a race held in his honour but he also has a ballad sang about him which can often be heard around the Sliabh Luachra area. The race headquarters are in the Currow Community Centre. Currow is just outside Castleisland on the Killarney Road and the village has produced many famous sports stars such as Rugby Internationals Mick and Tom Doyle, Moss Keane, Mick Galwey and another footballer the present Kerry Midfielder Seamus Scanlon. Hopefully in time a cyclist will be added to this impressive list.

The cycling club in Currow is developing nicely at the moment and is very proud of the way its membership has increasing to over 50 members. The club hope to have 8 of their own cyclists on the road Sunday with most members having a go at the time trial on Saturday. Currow is the base for the club but a lot of its members come from all over the Sliabh Luachra area from towns and villages such as Castleisland, Scartaglin, Farranfore, Gneeveguila, Firies and Cordal. Hence the name for the time trial on Saturday night. The final touches have been put to the plans for the An Post RAS overnight visit to the Castleisland area. The Stage finish is on Tuesday next (24th) with the Stage starting on Wednesday when the race leaves for Castletownbere via Currow. The timng of all the events are as follows;

Tuesday 24th May

8am – The participants doing the Race the RAS in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and GOAL will leave Kilrush with the intention of staying ahead of the RAS proper
11am – The AN POST RAS Tailteann will leave Kilrush

1pm (approx) – The Race the RAS competitors will enter the town for the first time. This arrival time will be hugely infleunced by the wind direction and speed on the day.

1.20pm (approx) – The finish of the Race the RAS on Upper Main Street

1.40pm – Welcome speeches from the Mayor of Kerry Pat Leahy and local councillor Bobby O’Connell. Presentations will then be made to the RAS Tailteann winner of 1953 Mick “the Iron Man” Murphy where the Cahirciveen native represented Castleisland on the Kerry team and to Mick Galwey as long as he completes the stage which we know he will!

1.50pm – Prizes awarded to the Art competition winners and Best Shop Window Display

2pm – The Community College Transition Years along with Billy O’Rourke have made a bicycle and will display it as the pass through the finish line with it. Rumour has it that Mossy Casey might be on board at some stage!

2.20pm (approx) – The main event of the day will pass through as the An POST RAS stage 3 enters the town for the first time. It will then go out College road and up past Crag Caves to the first Catagory 1 hill of the race.

2.35pm (approx) – The stage end on upper main street followed by the presentations of the various stage prizes and race leader jerseys by Miss An POST Ras Amber Key as well as the sponsors representatives who include Michael O’Muirceartaigh on behalf of the Irish Sports Council sponsoring the white jersey for the leading under 23 cyclist. There will also be the presentation of the Jackie O’Connor award for the first Kerry Cyclist over the line.

It is hoped that the St Kierans Ceoltas Group will play during the day also and Radio Kerry will broadcast from the Main Street during the day as well as having Weeshie Fogarty carrying out interviews for his Terrace Talk show.

The sponsors will also have some freebies such as tee shirts, stationery and general goodies around the stage finish as well as some other competions for very generous prizes. A race mascot Ruairi the RAS has been added this year.

Conradh na Gaeilge are also helping the race and promoting the Irish language as they have before in the RAS Tailteann.

On the actual racing front there are cyclists from over ten countries entered and Kerryman Paul Griffin has been given the honour of leading the Skoda Irish team into action. Listowels Eugene Moriarty is a leading cyclist on the Dectec Cycleways team. Many stars such as Mick Galwey, Seamus Moynihan, Killian Burns, John O’Keeffe, Ger Power a well as many other GAA players have signed up for the Race the RAS.

Wednesday 25th May

On Wednesday morning the cyclists will sign on at an Riocht and assemble at 10.40am for a ceremonial start as they begin their racing at 11am entering Currow about six minutes later. The Race the RAS cyclists will have left at 8am.

Traffic restrictions will be in place and all dog owners are asked to ensure they cant get out onto the road for safety reasons.

So lets see as many people as possible on the roads and streets to cheer on the Men of the RAS 2011.

The third stage of the 2011 Ras will be running into Castleisland this year on the 24th of the month after a 175km run from Kilrush. The riders will face the Ahaneboy climb before dropping down to the town and facing into the Crag Cave climb before a final descent and rush for the line on Main Street on returning to the town. It is sure to be a great spectator event and will be well worth the effort to travel out to view if circumstances allow. Those that can make the event are asked to consider offering their services as marshals to Currow CC who are the hosting club for the event finish. Those operating as marshals should be able to cycle to their position on the route and will have some of the best spots on the road to see the race come through. A friend of mine (Darragh Crowley) is taking part in the Race the Rás charity challenge of the day and attempting to make the same 175km trip for the Irish Cancer Society and GOAL whilst staying ahead of the professionals. The series will run for 7 consecutive weeks and with the 7th week will forming the Kerry TT championships on the same course. The distance is 20km and the course starts on the road to Castleisland just beyond the Earl of Desmond traffic island, and is an out and back to the first bypass roundabout. Entry fee is €10 per race or €50 for all 7 events including the Kerry Championships. Non cycling Ireland members can purchase a day licence for the series of 7 events for a discounted price of €20 (normally €10 per event). Sign on between 5.45 until 6.45 at the Earl of Desmond Car Park with first man off at 7pm.

Apologies for the lack of regular updates on this recently but I hope that the good weather has been enough of an incentive to get you out on the bike as much as possible. By this stage I hope you are used to regular spins on the bike and beginning to feel that little bit stronger and more confident with each spin. It is now May with approximately 8 training weeks left until the Ring of Kerry. Depending on your progress to date these weeks could be the most important in your training in ensuring that you enjoy yourself on the day.

At this stage I would encourage you to be out on the bike on average 3 – 4 times per week with varied distances and routes for each cycle. One of these cycles should be a 2-4 hour spin at a moderate and consistent pace. This is probably the most important cycle of the week and it is where you will become accustomed to longer cycles. The route on this should be of varied terrain with some climbing and these climbs should be approached at a steady pace.

The other cycles during the week should be 1 – 2 hour cycles and how you approach these is up to yourself. They are a good opportunity to work on your speed and climbing abilities by focusing the training sessions on short and fast sessions or they can be simply opportunities to spin your legs.

Kingdom Care are hosting a Charity Cycle Day on May 28th 2011. The cycle will depart from the Kingdom Care Charity Shop, Kingdom mart Buildings, Mounthawk , Tralee. The Route will be as follows – TRALEE MART -> FARRANFORE -> CASTLEISLAND -> TRALEE MART. All levels of cyclists are catered for – Advanced 50k and Beginners – 10k. The Currow Cycling Club has been given the honour of hosting a stage finish in Castleisland on May 24^th. The cyclists will make their way in what is being billed as the first decisive day of the race from Kilrush to Limerick, onto Abbeyfeale, to the new Limerick Road Roundabout and onto the bypass to the Tralee road where they turn left into and through Castleisland town to the old Library where its a left turn passing Crag Caves and the Catagory 1 climb, turning left again and following the same route to Castleisland to the finish line on Upper Main Street.

The route has two definite vantage points for spectators, the first by watching the race near the viewing point on the Limerick road and walking onto the climb. The other is at the finish line where you will again see the race twice with the all important finish on the second circuit. It is worth noting it will not be possible to watch the race on the climb and then make it to the finish as all the roads are being used by the race. It is also worth bearing in mind that the Currow CC along with the cooperation of the local people will aim to keep the circuit car free during the duration of the event which could begin as early as 2pm or as finish as late as 4pm. Diversions will be in place and with the new bypass everyone should be accomodated but please avoid travel at these times if you can. The organisers also ask that all dogs be kept off of the roads at this time for safety reasons.

Kerry cyclists will be keen to impress on this stage and recent Ras Mumhan winner Sean Lacey will hope to bring his rich vein of form into the race. Paul Griffin had a spectacular stage win in Ras Mumhans hardest stage into Waterville at the weekend and could relish the finishing circuit in Castleisland. Daniel Clifford, Eugene Moriarity and Kerry champion Niall Brosnan will also have ideas of stage glory as well as a tilt at one of the jerseys. They will have to contend with a field of 185 riders making it the biggest RAS or indeed cycle race ever to be held in Ireland with cyclists already confirmed from Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Austraia, New Zealand, USA, Russia, Ukraine and Greece.

Anoter feature of the race this year is the brainchild of Eamonn O’Muircheartaigh. This is being billed as the Race the RAS where the competitors will leave three hours before the main RAS and aim to stay ahead of the race. Locals Mick Galwey, Dara O Cinneide, John O’ Keeffe, Ger Power, Killian Burns, Seamus Moynihan, Karl O’Dwyer and John L McElligott as well as other Kerry players are taking part on this leg as well as a host of other GAA stars. This should add to the excitment on the day.

Radio Kerry will also be broadcasting live from 11am to 1pm on the day from the main street.

The local schools will also have an AN POST RAS Cycling Themed art competition so all pupils can contact their teachers about this. The two lucky winners will recieve a RAS jersey on the day from the stage. There willalso be a shop window display competition.

Castleisland will show their usual support for a race that there is a massve local history with. On one occasion the whole of the Kerry team was made up of cyclists from the Castleisland district and we hope it is not too long before we see a local in the event again.

Stage 4 will see the cyclists assemble at An Riocht and after a ceremonial start will begin racing at Cahernard as they make their way on the Wednesday to Castletownbere. The race will pass through Currow before heading to Farranfore, Killorglin, Killarney and Kemare before crossing the border to Cork.

Overall this event is a timely boost to the economy of County Kerry with over 400 people travelling with the race in total.

I was in Castleisland today to catch a glimpse of the Kerry Group 2011 Rás Mumhan passing. It was a good spectacle for anyone watching because there were a number of groups on the road. The video below is a quick video of the main bunch passing, at this stage they were a number of minutes behind the leading group.

The 2011 Kerry Group Rás Mumhan get under way in Killorglin Co. Kerry from Good Friday April 22 to Easter Monday April 25, 2010. This is a 4-Day International Cycle Race and is promoted by Killorglin Credit Union Cycling Club.

There are 160 cyclists and large number of support vehicles. There will be a rolling closure of the road as the race passes each area; some delays are to be expected. Killorglin Credit Union Cycling Club regrets any inconvenience caused.

Ballyseedy Wood is a beautiful network of Trails located just south of Tralee town. It is typically used by walkers but also makes an excellent place for a gentle off road cycle.

The trails themselves are quite short but there are so many loops and crossings paths that you could literally cycle there for hours on end if you wanted. The surface is is good condition for a trail but not suitable for racing bikes and tyres. There are two entrances, one on the eastern side (located near manor) and the other on the western side (just off of the N70 and can be quite difficult to find if you don’t know Tralee). The Trails are not very technical in nature but can be narrow in places. Would definately recommend you give this one a try and it’s a great place to bring the family and keep safe from traffic.

Cycle this short route when I want to unwind and typically would only go if the weather is nice. This is a real nature trail if there was ever one. The beautiful smells of wild garlic that grows in the wood really refresh the soul. Just one word of advise is to take this one easy as there are often walkers on the route and make sure to give them plenty time to know that you are approaching.

For 2011 the event organisers have developed a special sportive for the queen stage.  The Etape Rás Mumhan provides the leisure & sportive rider with a rare opportunity to ride a classic stage of a domestic  road stage race.

This cycle includes the infamous Connor Pass Hill and takes in the Scenic Slea Head whilst passing through Dingle town.

Consisting of 110km in length, this leisure cycle event should seriously be considered by anyone who is participating in this year’s Ring of Kerry Cycle. (taking place in early July)

The Ring of Kerry website has been updated for the 2011 edition of the cycle and you can now register at the following link. It’s even more of an excuse to get training.

Well yesterday was the first attempt at the Lacey Cup since 2007 and I’m glad to report that this attempt was much better than the last one. The first race of the season is always tough because of people not being 100% sure of what form they are in but this race with two very difficult climbs never disappoints in bringing on the hurt.

I started off with the A4 category and found the first 16K or so to Camp reasonable and was not under too much pressure. I was conscious of bunch positioning at the start of the climb as I wanted to be near the front so as to limit my losses going up Gleann na Gealt and this helped me stay in contention on the climb even though I did loose contact with the leading group with about 1k from the top.

Cycling over the summit, my heart was racing and I knew that there was a good few riders behind me so I decided to recover for a while and let them catch me and hoped we could work at again catching the lead group. I was caught before Annauscaul and the pace began to reach 40 kph on the road to Inch with a slight tail wind in pursuit of the main group. By this stage also our group had been caught by other groups including the A1 group that included Sean Lacey and Paul Griffin, both previous winners of the event.

Our group fragmented not far after Inch when a few of the elite riders put the hammer down and not many of us could respond so we continued to work together at a high pace until the finish after 75K. I finished at the back of this bunch after 2 hours and 2 minutes. Sean Lacey won with a time of 1 hour 49 minutes. All things considered I was pretty happy though I have serious work to do on the climbs.

The first race of the 2011 Road season gets underway this Sunday in Tralee and is being run by Tralee Bicycle Club. The 75 km annual handicap event is always well turned out and begins at the George Poff Sevice Station on the Dingle Road at 12.15pm.

The route takes the riders on to Camp, then there is a prime at Gleann a Gealt for the Jackie O’Connor Trophy. It is on then to Annascaul where the riders will turn left just outside the village onto Inch, Castlemaine. Then another left turn and a prime at the top of the Sliabh Mish climb for the Teddy Griffin Trophy, before the descent to the finish at Skehanagh just outside the town of Tralee on the N70 (Tralee-Killorglin Road).

I am racing this this year, on what will be my first attempt at it since 2007 and will be cycling as an A4 cyclist. I covered the route last weekend and it is tough. The road surface for the most part seems to be pretty ok with a few rough patches between the top of Gleann a Gealt to Annauscaul. Good look to everyone taking part and anyone near Tralee should be on the Castlemaine Rd round 2:15 pm to watch the finish.

You’d think I would be used to it by now but legs were like lead on the road tonight. I would know how this guys feels if I were lucky enough to be second and that close to the finish line with the winner but got dropped about 5k from the end of the spin tonight. Ah well sure there’s always the next time I suppose.

Dont like loosing

The 2011 An Post Rás route has just been launched. You can access the full details here. The most interesting news is that stages 3 & 4 (May 25th and 25th) will be in county Kerry.

Stage 3 will involve a very difficult 175.3 kilometre cycle from Kilrush to Castleisland ending with the Category 1 climb of Gleansharoon, just past Crag Cave with the summit being just 8 kilometres from the finish, which is bound to split the bunch up and make the finish very interesting. The stage end in Castleisland will be hosted by Currow Cycling Club and well done to them for being involved in bringing the Rás back to Castleisland.

Stage 4 will also begin in Castleisland and will see the riders travel 142 kilometres  to Castetownbere. For more information on the Rás, keep an eye on the Rás website.

With regards to training for the Ring of Kerry in July, February is the Month when you should be concerned with slowly beginning to extend your mileage and build on the level of fitness that you have already. For this month I would advise at least two session on the bike per week (preferably three) and two other sessions of strength/flexibility work which can either be done at the gym or at home.

It will depend upon your schedule and commitments but hopefully you have time for at least two good spins a week. What I mean by good at this time of year is a 1-2 hour cycle. The approach for these cycles should be about building a good base of mileage and you should no be beginning to pick more demanding routes with varies terrain and inclusive of some elements of climbing and  keeping a good cadence (80-100 rpm) throughout the spin.

The other two sessions in the week can be of your choosing whether you like a fast walk, a swim or a session in the gym. Whatever you so though make sure to allow some time for stretches and exercises that strengthen your back and abdomen muscles which will give you a strong core and improve your posture on the bike particularly on longer spins. Good luck for the month and be consistent!

I have been getting requests lately to go into a bit more detail on how to prepare for the Ring of Kerry so seeing as it is approximately six months away I will outline what I would deem to be a sufficient plan in terms of getting you ready for the 2nd of July. I plan to post monthly review of training advice so the following is what I would advise as being important for the month of January. For training plans to be effective the need to be specific to the person involved and specific to where they want to get to, but in terms of general tips and guidelines I will do my best with the following assumptions, that you may or may not have cycled the Ring of Kerry before, that you have a reasonable base of fitness and that you want to finish the day tired but relatively comfortable.

The priority for January should be about building a good base of fitness and starting to get used to a bit of regular cycling. The dark evenings and wet weather are not exactly that enticing to get out, in my case if the weather is really too bad I will hit the gym, but really the encouragement is that any exercise will help you build a base fitness from which you can build from next month onwards. In the gym (or at home) there are various activities I would advise based on where your fitness is at but if you are trying to loose weight, the focus would be on steady cardio workouts to burn calories but as your fitness grows, strength and core exercises should be introduced.

From a cycling perspective it is important however to try and get out at least once over each weekend, for at least a 10-20 mile cycle. The goal during those cycles should be about consistent and freeflowing pedalling in a relatively easy gear and keeping a moderate and steady pace. It can be an effort to get out so get a friend involved to help each other with motivation. Be sure to wrap up when cycling in the outdoors in January as it can be extremely cold.

There will be a memorial cycle for the late Jimmy Duffy (R.I.P.) on Saturday the 8th of January which is the first anniversary of his tragic passing. The cycle departs St. Pats G.A.A. club, Blennerville at 12:00 noon on Saturday leaving for Castleisland and returning to Blennerville again. The pace of this cycle is intended to be relaxed.

I have drawn up a draft of my own personal cycling calendar for events that I hope to do in 2011. There may be some events that crop up over the year that aren’t in this list that I hope to get around too.

Below is a link to a New Years Day Charity Cycle that is being held in Dingle, organised by Cumann Rothaiochta Chorca Dhuibhne. This is being held at 10 am on Saturday 1st January and is in aid of Camphill Communities.
