Today was the Kerry Time Trial Championship which was organized by Killorglin Cycling Club in association with www.ibike.ie and starting in Tralee. It was 20K and the same route as the Kerry Time Trial League, so from Ballycarthy Roundabout to Castleisland and back. There were 19 starters and I was off in position number 8. The outward journey had the wind to my back and the first 10K was covered in 14 minutes but turning at the roundabout for the return was a real eye opener with a cold and lively breeze straight into my face. I really suffered on the way home and ended up with a time of 33:46 for the 20K and ended up finishing mid table. A bit disappointing considering my last time (33:04) but I am happy that every ounce of energy was left on the road and I could not have given any more.
The series will run for 7 consecutive weeks and with the 7th week will forming the Kerry TT championships on the same course. The distance is 20km and the course starts on the road to Castleisland just beyond the Earl of Desmond traffic island, and is an out and back to the first bypass roundabout. Entry fee is €10 per race or €50 for all 7 events including the Kerry Championships. Non cycling Ireland members can purchase a day licence for the series of 7 events for a discounted price of €20 (normally €10 per event). Sign on between 5.45 until 6.45 at the Earl of Desmond Car Park with first man off at 7pm.
Here are some very amateur videos I took from the Kerry County Championship in September. You can get a full breakdown of event here.
The new Kerry Cycling champion is Niall Brosnan, a Tralee man cycling in the colours of the Edge Cycling Team. He won a top class race on Saturday with a solo break away halfway through the race to come home a very worthy victor leaving the main bunch 2 mins in his wake. He joins great men like the Iron Man Mick Murphy, Gene Mangan, John Mangan and John Blackwell as the Kerry Champion.

After a lapse of 10 years the Kerry County Cycling Championships will return this year and be held in Cordal near Castleisland on Saturday September 25th. The route starts on top of the hill in Ardmona down towards Cordal where it will take a left at Hughes bar and past the GAA pitch and continues to the grotto at Killmurry NS where it takes another left to the Grotto on the main cordal rd and then left again up Ardmona. The race will be 10 laps of this circuit and is open to all categories of cyclist provided that they are from Kerry or belong to a Kerry club.
A meeting will be held in Ulicks in Farranfore on Tues 17th Aug at 9pm to discuss holding a Kerry Championship this year. This meeting could be well worth attending to find out about the proposed event and suggest possible how it should be run. Hopefully this event will cater for all categories and possible be expanded to include a league or series of events next year.
