 The Nitty Gritty:

Route: Tralee-Kielduff-Dan Paddy Andy-Castleisland
Castleisland by-pass
Distance: 51 km

Height gain: 383  metres

Difficulty:  5.5/10

Head away from Tralee to the North, towards the IT north campus. Cross the N69 roundabout and keep on this road, which is a steady climb through Kielduff towards the Tralee Landfill. The climb goes on for a good 5 km but is steady and the road is quiet. Eventually you pass the landfill entrance and drop down to Dan Paddy Andy cross roads.
Take a right towards Castleisland. Another quiet and quite remote road taking in mainly bog and forest terrain. After some steady climbing and a twisty decent you’ll eventually join up with the N21 north of Castleisland. Take a right, through the first roundabout and down the by-pass and right at the next roundabout and back to Tralee still on the main N21.

Five of us did this ride quite comfortably and very relaxed in 2.5 hrs. The weather was still warm for the end of October and again we dodged any rain.
Between Tralee and Castleisland
The climb up to the landfill was the usual slog and we needed to work a bit as a team after Dan Paddy Andy’s as we were open to the wind, but once we started our decent towards Castleisland and got on to the main N21 things became pretty routine.
