This 50 Mile/80K route covers some of the largest towns in North Kerry with many options to extend or cut short along the way depending on how you feel. The route I have mapped leaves Tralee and heads in the direction of Castleisland, then onto Abbeyfeale via the main road, turning left in Abbeyfeale and left again for Listowel before heading back into Tralee.

Depending on the weather conditions the trip as far as Castleisland should be very straightforward, with the first climb of the day up to ‘Doneen’ the first real challenge. On the top of this climb there is a viewing point which has spectular views over Castleisland and it’s hinterland with views of Killarney in the background, this is a must if you a re not in too much of a rush. Continue on the main Limerick road and you will reach Abbeyfeale having a total of 25 Miles (40K) cycled. Half way through the cycle and a good time to break for food if needed.

When entering Abbeyfeale there is a signpost for Glin to the left, take the left road and almost immediately there is another signpost on the left for Listowel. This road is somewhat narrower that the main road is experienced all the way from Tralee so caution is necessary for potholes and traffic. The 10 Miles (16K) to Listowel is rolling and undulating.

After 35 Miles (56K) you will reach at juntion on a bridge just immediately before entering Listowel. Follow the signpost and go left for Tralee with another 15 Miles (24K) of undulating road left which can be punishing on tired legs.

KerryCyclist View:

I cycled this route very recently and my legs are still tired from the effort. I had been meaning to do this for some time. Alot of this route is exposed so be prepared for that. I am looking forward to doing this one again as soon as I can.
