Chasing Rainbows
Fenit Island in the wind
The Nitty Gritty:
Route: Fenit Island
Distance: 5.7 km
Height gain: 275 metres
Difficulty: 2/10
Details: Start walking on the Beach Island road from Fenit Without. Keeping left, drop down onto the rocky beach and follow the coast. The terrain is quite uneven, so you need to be quite steady on the feet.
Sadly what has the potential as a top loop walk in Kerry, is cut short by electric fences and trespass signs.
Wonderful hidden beach and cliffs further around the headland.
The Map and facts…
Experience: The normal Saturday cycle had to be cancelled due to high winds, so a bracing walk on Fenit Island was a good alternative.
The rain was hammering down at the start but it was evident only a heavy shower. Heading out to the north the wind was at my back giving little problems. The mix of showery weather, sun and wind created a none stop stream of rainbows sitting over the Atlantic.
A good percentage of the walk was on sand but at times it also meant hopping over rocks and uneven ground.
Some lovely views and scenery on this walk, as well as the added bonus of the odd fossil.
