Steady as she goes!
A relaxed 15 km without straying too far.
It’s probably fair to say that since cycling has become immensely popular over the last 8 years, the main focus for many cyclists is to don the club kit, clip in shoes, the road bike with drop handlebars and get out for a face-saving 40 km plus, pushing the pace as hard as is possible? There’s nothing wrong with this, in fact it’s a great release, wonderful exercise for both mind and body as well as a sociable way to spend an hour or three. But are some of us losing touch with the basics of cycling. The way we cycled as kids and being a bit more in touch with the environment around us?
Over the last month I have participated in the #30daysofbiking (a world-wide challenge to cyclists to ride their bike for everyday in April) and I have to say getting into the kit and pulling out the road bike every day doesn’t do it for me. What I do like is the idea of using the bike for work, for local duties and a relaxed amble around the vicinity of the town
With a bit of imagination and some local knowledge it’s not too difficult to put together a route which takes in a good few of the local cycle paths, quiet country lanes, a challenging hill, a fine coffee stop as well as a nice mix of seaside and countryside scenery.
This route takes in a route through and around Tralee town centre.
Distance: 15.5 km
Time: Anything from 45 minutes and up
Cycle-paths or road? Well over 50% of the route is on paths/walkways with a few quite roads thrown in. The paths included: The Tralee to Fenit cycle/walkway, the River Lee cycle/walkway, the canal from Blennerville to the lock gates and the canal from Lohercannon to the Marina.
Type of bike: Anything will do. Mountain bike, city bike, hybrid etc.
Clothing: Anything, but nothing too tight. Cycle clips might come in handy for loose trousers. Helmet. Something warm depending on time of year.
Break-time: I used O’Shea’s Gala in Blennerville. A nice excuse for a bit of lunch in a shop that has undergone a face-lift and has plenty of seating, with nice Sliabh Mish mountain views. Check out the new bicycle parking area and new bike rack.
The route: Starting near Garvey’s Supervalu take the Caherslee Rd. up to O’Donnells. Take a right onto Braker O’Regan Road before another right down the cycleway/walkway 2 km, crossing Rock St. and continuing onto the junction with Oakpark and John Joe Sheehy Road. Proceed towards Tralee town centre and in towards St Johns Church 5 km, taking a right through the parking area and onto Park Lane and Denny St. Cycle around the back of the Ashe/Museum and meander through the edge of the park leaving it down the passage way between the athletics pitch and the CBS Secondary School. Cross Dan Spring Road and take a right onto the River Lee cycle/walkway.
Take a left at the end of the path and proceed up Ballyard Rd. 7 km and the big climb of the day! At Kearney’s Rd. take a right and enjoy the downhill section alongside the railway line and into Blennerville. Take a left (you are now opposite the windmill) and take a well-earned break at O’Shea’s Gala 10 km.
Leave O’Shea’s and come back on yourself passing the windmill and cross the river and canal. Once over the canal take the left turn and follow the canal path to the lock gates. Continue around and take the quiet road running parallel to the path which enters into Lohercannon. Take a right at junction and cycle in the direction of the canal and mountains 13 km. Proceed to the canal and cycle east in the direction of Tralee towards the town and marina.
Once at the marina head left and proceed up the Basin towards Strand St., before crossing the mini roundabout and onto Matt Talbot Rd. and your start position 15.5 km.
