Bridging the cycling divide.

Thanks to the pull of social media, curiosity got the better of me and I duly attended the advertised cycling meeting in Tralee on Saturday. Basically it was showcasing the fact that blogger/journalist Cian Ginty, had taken a delegation of people over to the Netherlands. They experienced first hand, the joys of cycling in and around the Utrecht area. Taking in the many different forms of cycle paths and roads in the area. We also saw their attempts at cycle storage, engineering and the various forms of cycling accessories used in the Netherlands. [...]

Soloing it out West.

It's been a busy enough weekend in this part of Kerry. Cycling didn't seem to be the top of everyone's agenda. From a club perspective there was a wedding on Friday, which probably had a few members nursing hangovers, then there's the small matter of Kerry heading up to Dublin this weekend for the All Ireland, which generally switches people's focus. Add to that, one or two of my regular cycling companions leaving the good ship Kerry for a few days away in other areas of Ireland and the Rugby World Cup, the Saturday spin had SOLO stamped all [...]

There are times when you tentatively leave the house in a half-hearted fashion, going through the motions of trying to keep yourself in shape and just getting out on the bike. For this story we have to go back to early June and a day or so after the Bank holiday. What an awful day that was! We actually had the fire on. It was like mid winter! Wet, dark, windy and cold. I waited until about Wednesday when things had calmed down nicely and headed out towards the Knocknagoshel area to explore a couple of roads I had on my to do list. The roads didn't [...]

The Thing of Kerry

A 200 km DIY audax off Kerry's beaten track. It's funny how things go. Last week I checked my facebook  page and saw some guy doing a 300 km ride in England, mainly in the dark. He was commenting how peaceful and tranquil it was. Fast forward to last Sunday which was miserable and gave me too much thinking time. I had a 200 km ride planned with an extremely early start thrown in, for the night ride experience. [...]

The Ring in Reverse

I suppose one of the disadvantages of living is Kerry, is that you take the things that are on your door-step for granted. One thought I use for motivation, is that people pay good money from around the World to visit here, so let's make the most of what we have and get out and see it. Certainly one of the show piece routes has to be the Ring of Kerry. From a cycling perspective, the charity cycle in early July has certainly taken the lead in cycling this route, it's probably the only way many people would contemplate doing it. From a personal [...]
